After reading Dowry Divas, I looked forward to reading this book. The story line kept my interest. Identifying Omar's underlying issues helped me understand some of the conflict he had in the story. I appreciate how the story addresses some of the problems that are facing the American Muslim community. It's a quick and easy read. It helps those who are not Muslim to have a peek into Muslim society while simultaneously it allows Muslims to reflect upon their actions and realize that there is much room for improvement. I recommend this book for anyone interested in seeing how some Muslims and their families feel regarding issues that affect us all.
I purchased this book because it was written by the same author as Dowry Divas (which I loved). The book was so good that I couldn't put it down until I finished. I believe it to be a realistic view of the struggles and temptations American Muslims are faced with everyday. Zara J did an excellent job building the characters in a short period of time. I found myself rooting for and empathizing with each character at different points in the story. I was most impressed with and inspired by the way the main character, Umar, stayed focused on Islam and didn't continue to stray even when his life was being turned upside down. American Boy is proof that Muslim Fiction can be just as full of drama, unpredictable, and as interesting a read as Urban Fiction without all the emphasis on sex, drugs, and money. And I believe that takes great talent. Amazing job Author Zara J!! I looked forward to reading more from you and University Publications.
As expected, this book was great. Zara J touched on many issues that are faced by people everyday, Muslim and non-Muslim. I was able to empathize which each character throughout the story. Though, it was a fictional story I'm sure there will be many who can relate to the story. She humanized Muslims in a way that will allow people to see that, though we strive to please Allah and do what is right we are no different than every other individual. I applaud her work to offer us a genre we could relate to and enjoy at the same time. Looking forward to the upcoming releases of her publishing company. Just as with Dowry Divas I hope she does a sequel to let us know how things turn out.
I loved it and I couldnt put it down.It certainly held my attention. This is the 2nd book I read by this author and I am not the least bit disappointed. Can't wait to read the next.I see ya, sister Zara.
Interesting read
I loved this story! I finished this book in two days! I'm hoping for a part two :-)
So, the author apparently, doesn't think much of Muslim men. Umar comes off as cold hearted, dishonorable and a spoiled child who has to have his own way. The main female leads aren't any better but certainly not any worse. Celine is insecure, wild and willing to be lead to Islam with love. Tara wants what she wants and can't even bother to be kind to someone interested in her religion. Kind of like those horrible Christians who push people away from God. They're all manipulative and incredibly selfish. His mom's just a creep. Of course, so is Celine's. The ending is just sad yet flat. Really sorry I read this. I thought maybe the characters would turn to Allah at the end and not to their own desires.
I really enjoyed this book! None of us are perfect- and each one of us has different issues and challenges to deal with. Not only is this book a real page turner- it was wonderful to experience the realistic and memorable characters! Zara J takes you on a journey of real emotion and drama--giving you a glimpse of how life happens and how a believer deals with it all. A must read!!!!!!
