This book serves as a gentle introduction to doing assembly programming on the Raspberry Pi. It is easy to read. and follow along as Dunne walks you through all the options in assembly.I really like how he tells you in each chapter a summary of all of the assembly commands and assembler directives that were covered in that chapter. Pedagogically, it's a great device. There's lots of full examples of source code that you can read carefully through to understand the author's points. Every line is commented as well. If you had this book and a Raspberry Pi, you should be able to self-teach yourself all the way to competency. Some minor nitpicks: first, the layout and design of the book could use another pass over it. There's overly long spaces before new sections, and the margins are cut really close to the top of the page. Also, I'm not really a big fan of flowcharts, and there are flowcharts everywhere in this book. Some of the diagrams, like the ones in the VFP section, could probably be redone for clarity.Overall though, I think this is the first book that gives Bruce Smith (who has several excellent books on assembly programming for the Pi / ARM32) a run for his money.

First, why 4.5 stars? The appendices for ARM instructions, Linux service calls, and the index are too limited in what is covered. Okay, that's the bad. Here's the good...The chapter topics are in a logical order. The structure of each chapter is excellent. I especially like the use of diagrams, flow charts, and assembly code boxes. The material is presented in clear and easy to understand text. Prof. Dunne also promotes good software design and engineering principles. I particularly liked the early introduction to using the GDB debugger to view code, memory, and register contents.I thank Prof. Dunne for writing this book in the first place, as good books on assembly language are rare. Lastly, it is my sincere hope that as the Raspberry Pi sets new standards in teaching computer science courses, Prof. Dunne will publish a Raspberry Pi assembly language book covering some intermediate and advanced topics.
