Fabulous book! I would give it a 6 Star rating if I could. I enjoyed the entire book, but I thought the following chapters were especially good:* Chapter 3: Blockade, Trade Warfare, and Economic Attack;* Chapter 5: The Fleets;* Chapter 8: Capital Ships. This chapter describes the conceptual thinking behind the British and German Navies' battleship designs as well as quite a lot of detail on the ships' detailed design characteristics. The sub-section "The Imperial German Navy" (pages 195 - 213) is especially good;* Chapter 12: Protecting Trade--The U-Boat War;* Chapter 14: The Anti-Submarine Armada.I would say that that this is one of the finest overall books I have ever read on the naval aspects of WW I.
This book is one of the very best information sources of WWI naval technology I have come across. It provides detailed information in a readable format with many picture illustrations. Although the book is slightly Royal Navy weighted it includes considerable information about the High Seas Fleet. The chapters on submarines, Anti-submarine Warfare (ASW) and mine warfare are excellent. The ASW chapter information, especially on early listening devices, is informative. The book does not discuss sea battles or naval personalities in detail. Its only weakness is lack of naval charts to help illustrate the text.Due to the great amount of well presentation information in the book it is not a quick read if you are interested in the topics. As I read the book I wondered how many man hours went into researching and writing it. I recommend the book as a worthwhile addition to anyone interested about WWI at sea and/or the naval buildup to WWII.
This really is a great overview of the Strategy, Tactics, and Technology used in WW1. The pictures are plentiful and interesting, and the discussion is engaging and covers a lot of aspects of the war, including a strategy and technology focus on U-Boats and Mines. It does NOT have a detailed description of all engagements, although major battles and raids are discussed. I was pleasantly surprised by the coverage, and learned a lot regarding the technology used.Couple of minor disappointments. I was hoping for a little more depth in battle tactics, such as squadron formations, smokescreens, use of squadron wings, screening forces, signaling, destroyer tactics,... There is some discussion in the context to specific battles. Also, there really aren't a lot of maps highlighting the strategies and battles. I bought The Great War at Sea: A Naval Atlas, 1914-1919, which provides a good supplement to the book.
Friedman has devoted considerable time to researching naval combat in the Great War. His book "Naval Weapons of World War One" was a treasure trove of detailed information about the weapons, and should really be read in conjunction with this book, which covers more of the strategy, operations and tactics. Here you can follow the pre-war thinking about how fleets should maneuver and fight, with the lessons that were learned during the war. The sections on anti-submarine warfare and aircraft are particularly well presented and detailed. As other reviewers have noted, the book is most detailed when it comes to British plans and operations. This is understandable, since the Royal Navy at this time was the pre-eminent navy and had the greatest responsibilities. Still, there is a vast field to be addressed on the French, Italian and Austro-Hungarian navies and their operations in the Mediterranean. As Friedman has already done some of the research on weapons for those fleets, one hopes a volume on that aspect of the Great War might someday appear. There is one significant omission, however, along with a more minor one. The major omission is the whole question of night combat. The only references are a couple paragraphs on ship identification at night, and the caption to one photograph that mentions the British ship pictured did not have controlled searchlights. Jellicoe mentioned the importance of the German superiority in use of searchlights and star shell (which the British only produced after copying a captured German shell). This was seen in the Royal Navy as a major failing, and considerable effort was devoted between the wars to provide the required technology and training. The success of that effort was proven at Matapan. I had hoped that this book would at least devote a couple pages to the effectiveness of the larger and better controlled German searchlights, and their tactical use of illumination. The minor omission is any discussion of the tactical use of smokescreens, and the available equipment for generating such screens. One photo shows smoke floats being used to screen a convoy - a much inferior method compared to smoke generating apparatus installed on ships. According to Jellicoe, this again was an area where the Germans were well in advance of the British.Nevertheless, for anyone interested in how the war at sea was planned and fought at an operational and tactical level, this is a must-buy book.
Norman Friedman has the unique ability to translate strategy into technological development. This book continues the topic during the WW I period,
